Today we begin our special MIPS Tips segment, as part of our MACRA Series here on the Acumen Blog.  Join us every Tuesday for the remainder of the year to check out our MIPS Tip for the week.mips-tips-2

MIPS Tip Tuesday:

Do you know how to avoid MIPS without a penalty?

The only way to dodge a 4% penalty in 2019 is by meeting one of the following criteria:

  • Be a newly enrolled Medicare clinician (clinicians who enroll in Medicare for the first time during a performance period)
  • Meet the low-volume threshold (Medicare Part B allowed charges less than or equal to $30,000 OR 100 or fewer Medicare Part B patients)
  • Participate significantly in an Advanced APM (by meeting the qualified participant definition)

I had a question about the APM and MIPS. If our practice takes part in the APM via an ESCO. Does the outpatient part of our practice have to take part in the MIPS program?

      Hi Dr. Thakkar!

If you are a part of an ESCO, and you meet the qualifying participant threshold on the APM track, then no, you will NOT have to do MIPS in any location where patients are seen.

      Thanks for reading the blog!
