Chronic kidney disease rates increasing in older Americans

Chronic kidney disease is becoming more common in Americans aged 80 and older, according to a research letter published online Sept. 24 in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is providing three new resources for preventing infections in dialysis patients: a dialysis provider training video and accompanying poster and dialysis patient pocket guide. Infections are a leading cause of death in hemodialysis patients.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 20 million people in the US aged 20 years or older suffer from chronic renal failure.

 

Maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance in the kidney

Distal renal tubular acidosis (dRTA) develops in response to the loss of acid secretion by α-intercalated cells in the kidney. The inability to remove acid from the body results in low blood potassium levels (hypokalemia), dehydration, and excess calcium in the urine (hypercalcemia), which leads to urinary stone formation.

Having children appears to benefit mortality rates in people with type 1 diabetes, but has a greater beneficial effect for women, according to a study presented at the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, held from Sept. 23 to 27 in Barcelona, Spain.
